For Medical Providers

Health providers can deliver primary health care to students, staff and sometimes the community, through school-based health centers (SBHCs). This section is designed to help providers bring important medical, behavioral, and/or oral health services to schools through an SBHC in your community.
There are many paths to developing or expanding clinical health services in schools. We suggest that you begin by considering the following questions:

  • What health services can you provide?
  • What kinds of clinical care do students need that the school doesn't currently offer?
  • How can you build on your clinical services, staff expertise, and established partnerships to bring clinical care to one or more schools?

Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, published the policy statement, School-Based Health Centers and Pediatric Practice, in January, 2012. It outlines challenges, opportunities and recommendations between pediatric practices and SBHCs.
