Welcome Back!

Posted by Kelli Caseman on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 12:00:00 am

The 2014-2015 school year is here! And earlier than ever in most counties. All counties are required to have 180 days of instruction for students, which means that most schools will have a longer calendar year, and the summer break will be shorter-- especially if we have a bad winter, and schools are closed more than usual.

The SBHCs in our state are on the verge of breaking a record. Currently, we have 103 SBHCs operating in our state. In 2010, we had 53 SBHCs. This means that in a matter of months, we will have doubled the number of centers in West Virginia in less that five years. Amazing! We are in awe of the sponsoring agencies that are prioritizing school health in their expansion efforts.

New sites have opened in Hancock and Doddridge Counties. Another will open in Nicholas County before the end of September. Check back to our website for updates and Open House events.

Senate Bill 455: MOVE TO IMPROVE

Posted by Kelli Caseman on Monday, February 3, 2014 at 12:00:00 am

Much like its predecessor, last year's ‘Feed to Achieve’ bill, the ‘Move to Improve’ bill aims to keep students healthy.

Introduced in the Senate Health and Human Resources Committee, SB 455 would require 30 minutes of physical activity for students in the state’s elementary and middle schools. Activity could be incorporated into regular classes and would not subtract time either from other classes.

The bill has moved through the HHR Committee and is expected to be taken up soon by the Senate Education Committee.

You can learn more about the bill here.
